In the Life of the Saints
A Roman governor with no theological training, Ambrose was suddenly acclaimed bishop of Milan by popular demand while trying to keep peace between rival factions. His preaching converted the young Augustine, and he famously made the emperor Theodosius do public penance for a massacre.
