Known as the “Apostle of Kentucky,” Presbyterian minister David Rice spent over twenty years working among enslaved people in Virginia before relocating to the Kentucky frontier in 1783. At Kentucky's 1792 constitutional convention, he delivered a forceful address, “Slavery Inconsistent with Justice and Good Policy,” arguing for the new state to abolish slavery outright. He lost the vote and withdrew from the convention, but spent the rest of his life working through the Kentucky Abolition Society, all while founding the Presbytery of Transylvania and what became Transylvania University.
