In the Life of the Saints
An Olympic sprinter who famously refused to run his best event because its qualifying heat fell on a Sunday, Liddell won gold in a different race entirely and became a national hero. He later returned to China as a missionary, where he died in a Japanese internment camp near the end of World War II.
