In the Life of the Saints
Born enslaved, Douglass taught himself to read in secret before escaping to freedom and becoming the most prominent Black abolitionist of his era. A licensed preacher, he drew a sharp public distinction between what he called “the Christianity of Christ” and the slaveholding religion he'd grown up under, which he condemned as a corruption of the faith.
