A reformed thief and gambler in his youth, Müller became a Bristol evangelist who cared for over 10,000 orphans over his lifetime, refusing ever to ask for donations directly. He kept meticulous records of unsolicited gifts arriving at moments of desperate need, which he saw as evidence of answered prayer.
