Gregory the Great

In the Life of the Saints
A former Roman prefect who gave away his wealth to become a monk, Gregory was elected pope against his own wishes in 590. He reorganized the church's care for the poor, sent missionaries to convert England, and left such a mark on worship music that a whole style of chant still bears his name.
