In the Life of the Saints
The daughter of a prominent Calvinist preacher, Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin as a direct religious and moral protest against slavery, drawing on her own Christian convictions about human dignity. The novel became the best-selling book of the 19th century after the Bible and helped galvanize the abolitionist movement.
