Henry Martyn
1781 – 1812 · England / India / Persia
“Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.”
Arriving in India at twenty-five resolved to “burn out for God,” Martyn spent six years translating the New Testament into Hindustani, Persian, and Arabic before dying of tuberculosis at thirty-one during a journey through Persia to test his translation. He was mentored by Charles Simeon and deeply inspired by the diary of David Brainerd, continuing a chain of influence between missionaries who never met.
