Hugh Latimer

c. 1485 – 1555 · England

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

A former Catholic priest who became one of England's most popular Reformation preachers, Latimer was burned at the stake alongside fellow reformer Nicholas Ridley under Queen Mary I. His last words to Ridley are remembered as a promise that their deaths would light a candle never to be put out.
