Ida B. Wells

1862 – 1931 · United States

“Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.”

Psalm 82:3 (KJV)

Born into slavery and raised by deeply religious parents on biblical teaching, Wells became a pioneering journalist who risked her life investigating and exposing the lynching of Black Americans across the South, writing for Christian publications early in her career. After a mob destroyed her newspaper office for her reporting, she continued her anti-lynching crusade from Chicago, later writing of her faith, “God is over all and He will, so long as I am in the right, fight my battles.” She received a posthumous Pulitzer Prize in 2020.
