A Bohemian priest and rector of Charles University in Prague, Hus preached in the common language and criticized the sale of indulgences a century before Luther. Promised safe conduct to defend his views at the Council of Constance, he was arrested anyway and burned at the stake, a betrayal that fueled unrest in Bohemia for decades.
