A Scottish missionary to the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), Paton faced down hostile, sometimes cannibalistic tribes, losing his first wife and infant son to illness within months of arriving. He persisted for decades, eventually seeing Christianity take root across most of the islands he'd once been warned would kill him.
