In the Life of the Saints
A former captain of slave-trading ships, Newton experienced a gradual conversion at sea that eventually led him to become an Anglican priest and outspoken abolitionist. He wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace,” reflecting on his own transformation from, in his words, a wretch to a man saved by grace.
