In the Life of the Saints
A Presbyterian minister and theologian trained in Scotland, Witherspoon became president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1768, where he taught moral philosophy to a generation of America's founders, including future president James Madison. In 1776 he became the only member of the clergy to sign the Declaration of Independence, arguing to Congress that political and religious liberty had always risen or fallen together throughout history.
