Katharina von Bora

A former nun who escaped her convent hidden in a fish barrel, Katharina von Bora married Martin Luther in 1525, defying convention on both sides. She ran their household and finances so capably — including a working farm and brewery — that Luther nicknamed her “my lord Katie.”
