Lancelot Andrewes
1555 – 1626 · England
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
Fluent in as many as fifteen modern languages and six ancient ones, Andrewes served as director of the First Westminster Company and lead translator overseeing the entire King James Bible project, personally translating Genesis through 2 Kings. King James reportedly kept Andrewes's sermons under his pillow, and the bishop's own prayer journal, Preces Privatae, remains in print four centuries later.
