Matthew Henry

1662 – 1714 · Wales / England

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”

Psalm 119:130 (KJV)

Reportedly able to read Scripture aloud by age three, Henry spent the final decade of his life writing a verse-by-verse commentary on the entire Bible, completing his own work through the book of Acts before his death at fifty-two. Fellow ministers finished the remainder using his own study notes, and the completed commentary became one of the most widely used Bible commentaries in history; Charles Spurgeon urged that “every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least.”
