Origen of Alexandria
c. 185 – 253 · Egypt
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
One of the most brilliant and controversial minds of the early church, Origen produced a staggering volume of biblical scholarship, including the Hexapla, a six-column comparison of Old Testament texts. He was tortured during a Roman persecution late in life and died from his injuries soon after.
