Luther's closest collaborator and a brilliant young scholar, Melanchthon wrote the Augsburg Confession, the foundational statement of Lutheran belief, at age 33. Where Luther was fiery, Melanchthon was conciliatory, often working to find common ground with Catholics and other reformers alike.
