Polycarp of Smyrna
c. 69 – 155 · Asia Minor
“Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer... be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”
A direct disciple of the apostle John, Polycarp led the church at Smyrna into old age. When Roman soldiers came to arrest him, he refused to renounce Christ, reportedly saying he had served him eighty-six years and would not deny him now. He was burned at the stake at about age 86.
