Richard Baxter
1615 – 1691 · England
“Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly.”
A Puritan pastor known as a tireless peacemaker amid England's fractured seventeenth-century church, Baxter spent nearly twenty years shepherding the parish of Kidderminster, where his preaching transformed what had been a largely indifferent congregation into a devoted one. He wrote more than 200 works, including The Reformed Pastor and A Call to the Unconverted, the latter credited with numerous conversions and still read today. Despite his influence, he refused the bishopric of Hereford after the Restoration, a decision that effectively ended his career within the established church.
