In the Life of the Saints
Born into slavery in New York, Truth escaped to freedom and became a preacher, abolitionist, and advocate for women's rights, drawing her authority directly from her faith. Her best-known speech, delivered in 1851, challenged her audience with the refrain “Ain't I a woman?”
