Teresa of Ávila

1515 – 1582 · Spain

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”

Psalm 27:14 (KJV)

A Carmelite nun known for vivid mystical experiences, Teresa reformed her order back toward simplicity and poverty despite fierce resistance, founding over a dozen new convents across Spain. Her writings on prayer, especially The Interior Castle, remain foundational texts of Christian mysticism.
