Zacharias Ursinus
1534 – 1583 · Germany
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.”
A student of Philipp Melanchthon for seven years, Ursinus was recommended to Prince Frederick III of the Palatinate as a Reformed theologian, where he became the principal author of the Heidelberg Catechism in 1563. Written to comfort ordinary believers rather than win theological arguments, the Catechism opens by asking what a Christian's only comfort is in life and death, answering simply: belonging, body and soul, to Jesus Christ. It remains one of the most widely used confessional documents in Reformed churches worldwide.
